Diaundra's TL;DR - The Design of Everyday Things ✏️
6 things I learned reading 'The Design of Everyday Things' by Don Norman
My definition of “design”: “Design is the language spoken between humans and things”
Book takeaways
Design is the intersection of human psychology and technology
“Why?” is the most important question in the world (practice “5 why’s” method as much as possible). Double diamond model <><> is helpful for defining why
How to design: Observe -> ideate -> prototype -> test -> ITERATE. Iteration is your best friend. “Fail frequently, fail fast”
There is no such thing as human error. Human error = bad design
Knowledge is both in the head (declarative knowledge) and in the world (procedural knowledge). Incorporate both in designs
Constraints are physical, cultural, semantic, and logical. These can hurt you if not thought of, but will help you if used intentionally
