Diaundra's TL;DR - Mindset by Carol Dweck 🧠
"Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?"
I’m not sure if it’s because the cover looks like a vitamins bottle or because they handed this book out on campus at Microsoft orientation but I have been dodging this book for years. But alas, it came back into my orbit a couple weeks ago & I figured I’d finally give it a try.
The verdict: The Seattle techies were onto something. Dweck does a great job showcasing how our mindsets are formed, how they show up in everyday life, the impact of them, and how we can cultivate them.
What I learned:
The power of mindset: Talent can only take you so far, your mindset is the most imperative tool for success.
Fixed vs. growth mindset: Fixed mindset = believing abilities are static. Growth mindset = believing abilities can be developed through effort.
Reframe failure: If you are not failing, than you are not trying anything harder than what you have already mastered. Step out of your comfort zone & fail.
You are not your ability. Fixed mindset folks often run from the idea of failure because if they cannot “succeed,” then they see themselves as a failure. Whereas growth mindset folks consider the effort, learning, and the attempt as the success. It’s about the process > the result.
It’s an abundant world: Celebrate the success of others without feeling threatened. A growth mindset leads you to see others' achievements as inspiration and proof of what's possible.
Never stop learning: “If you don’t use it, you will lose it.”
My favorite question from Dweck, "Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?"
Till next time.
With love,
Diaundra
