Diaundra's TL;DR - 🥬🥦🫐
"The goal is not just to add years to your life but to add life to your years." - Michael Greger
Yes, I’m with you… the title of the book is cringe. Okay, now that we’re past that.
I’ve been making my way through nutrition books, with other reads being ‘Genius Foods’ by Max Lugavere, ‘Superlife’ by Darin Olien, ‘Outlive’ by Dr. Peter Attia, and now this one. Greger’s take is, for sure, my favorite. It’s tangible, realistic, and scientifically based. Nutrition books are a lot like reading philosophy. There are a lot of different styles and beliefs that people subscribe to. Who can really say what’s right or wrong?
From all these readings, here are the nutritional/wellness philosophies that I (emphasis on I) subscribe to:
Overall existence: meditate, a lot
Nutrition:
Unfortunately (and I say unfortunately because fried chicken sandwiches are my guilty pleasure), I’ve been convinced that a plant-based diet is optimal. I’ve compromised by being “pescatarian.” & (quotation marks here because, in my opinion, it’s more about being focused on a way of being than shackled by a label.)
Protein goal: 100g of protein a day
Serving goal: 3 servings of beans, 1 serving of berries, 3 servings of fruits, 1 serving of cruciferous veggies, 2 servings of greens, 2 servings of veggies, 1 serving of flaxseed, 1 serving of nuts, lots of water
And let’s be clear - these are goals. That means every morning I wake up and try. For me, it’s more about consistency in trying, rather than 100% scores every day. Big “just try” energy over here.
Fitness:
A mix of strength training, cardio, and flexibility.
Moving, in any capacity, at least 5x a week
My highest philosophy is finding movement that I actually enjoy. That’s priority one.
Priority two = Zone 2 (chill cardio) training 2x a week, VO2 MAX (I can’t breathe, this sucks cardio) training 2x a week, lift 3x a week, stretch every day.
I share my philosophy & goals on nutrition mostly as a tool of accountability. If you see me, check me on this. For your own journey, check out these books & build a philosophy that feels right for you (:
Till next time.
With love,
Diaundra
